Blood Knot

IntermediateLine to Line

A classic knot for joining two lines of similar diameter, twisting each line around the other several times before threading the tag ends back through the middle. It makes a slim, low-profile connection that runs smoothly through rod guides — a mainstay for fly fishing leader building.

Profile

  • Strength: 6/10
  • Ease: 3/10
  • Speed: 3/10
  • Reliability: 6/10
  • Versatility: 4/10
  • Compactness: 8/10

How to Tie It

  1. Overlap the two line ends and twist one around the other 5 times, then pass the tag end back through the gap in the middle.
  2. Twist the second line around the first 5 times in the opposite direction, then pass its tag end back through the same middle gap from the other side.
  3. Moisten the knot and pull both standing lines steadily so the wraps compress together, then trim both tag ends.

Best For

  • Monofilament
  • Fluorocarbon

Tips

  • Works best when both lines are close in diameter — for very different thicknesses, an Albright Knot holds up better.
