Palomar Knot

BeginnerHook & Lure

One of the strongest and simplest knots for attaching line to a hook or lure. You fold the line into a loop, tie an overhand knot with the doubled line, pass the loop over the hook, then pull tight. Because the line is doubled through the whole knot, it holds up exceptionally well on braided line.

How to Tie It

  1. Double about 6 inches of line and pass the folded loop through the hook or lure eye.
  2. Tie a simple overhand knot with the doubled line, letting the hook hang loose at the bottom — don't tighten yet.
  3. Pass the loop over the entire hook, moisten the knot, then pull both the loop and the tag end to cinch it down tight.

Best For

  • Braid
  • Monofilament

Tips

  • Because the line runs doubled through the whole knot, it's one of the few knots that doesn't lose much strength even when tied slightly imperfectly.
  • This is the go-to knot for braided line — braid's slick surface makes many other knots slip, but Palomar's doubled wraps hold firm.
