Trucker's Hitch

IntermediateCamping & Utility

A mechanical-advantage knot for cinching down a load — a tarp, a canoe on a roof rack, a tent guy line — far tighter than you could pull by hand. A loop partway down the rope acts like a pulley, letting you haul the working end through for extra leverage before tying off.

How to Tie It

  1. Tie a loop partway down the rope (a slipped loop or a Perfection Loop-style loop works well).
  2. Run the working end around your anchor point, then back up through the loop.
  3. Pull down hard on the working end to cinch the load tight, then lock it off with a couple of half hitches around the standing part.

Tips

  • The loop partway down the rope acts like a pulley, roughly doubling the pulling force you can apply by hand.
