Nymph
SpecializedIntermediateFreshwater
A subsurface fly imitating the immature, wingless stage of an aquatic insect, fished dead-drift near the bottom where trout do the bulk of their feeding. Unglamorous compared to a dry fly on the surface, but it accounts for the majority of a trout's actual diet.

Technique tips
- Drift it at the same speed as the current with no drag — any unnatural pull on the line and trout refuse it instantly.
- Use a strike indicator or tight-line technique to detect subtle takes — nymph bites are often just a slight pause or twitch.
- Add or remove split shot to keep it ticking near bottom — too high in the column and it's out of the strike zone.
