Shrimp

EssentialBeginnerSaltwater

A live or soft plastic shrimp imitation fished under a popping float or worked along bottom, the single most productive inshore saltwater bait across flats, docks, and grass beds. Nearly every inshore predator — redfish, trout, snook — keys in on shrimp as a primary food source.

Technique tips

  • Fish it under a popping cork and give it a sharp pop every few seconds — the sound imitates a shrimp breaking the surface, pulling fish in.
  • Hook it through the tail so it swims naturally and doesn't spin on the retrieve.
  • Work the edges of grass beds and drop-offs — that's where ambush predators wait for shrimp moving between cover.
